I bought one of these locks, and it worked great — until the key broke in the lock (rendering the lock useless and my bike attached to the stand).

Open inspecting the situation (and after five+ hours of self-blame), I realized that the keys are made of a very fragile metal. The key just wasn’t strong enough and no matter how “careful” the instructions tell you to be, the darn thing is bound to break.

While I’ll buy Kryptonite again, I’ll not buy this lock. I need both the lock and key to well-made.

Although no lock can protect your bicycle from a determined thief with enough time, the New York Std. will make it more likely that he will pass up your bike for an easier target. Its all about how and where you lock your bike. The New York Std. is a big/heavy lock, but I already knew that from reading the description. After mounting it in my triangle there was still enough room for my cage and water bottle. Having said that, I can tell you that this is one of the best bike locks on the market. Its superior quality is apparent from the moment you take it out of the package, and the mounting bracket, although made mostly of plastic, is sturdy and robust. The keys slide all the way in and release the shackle from the crossbar with no problems. Make sure your key is all the way in before you turn, but don’t force it! If your have to force it something is wrong, and you should call, email, or write [...] Your Kryptonite has a lifetime warranty, and if there are any defects they will fix or replace it free of charge! And if your bike is ever stolen because the lock failed, they will reimburse you for the base price of your bike*([...]). Of course you have to make sure that you sign-up for the *Anti-Theft offer and provide proof that the lock was defeated, but that is understandable. The Key Safe program, when you register, provides you with the first 2 replacement keys free of charge. The free keys are standard not the lighted. Before you purchase this lock I suggest that you visit Kryptonite’s website. You will learn about other great features that I didn’t mention here. I am very satisfied with this lock, but it’s only a lock. Use it in conjunction with other security devices available, be careful about where and how long you leave your bike, and maybe you won’t become another victim!! I bought this lock because of Slate.com’s review of bike locks and this was the best according to their tests. The steel, silver looking clip is to attach it to your bike. I didn’t realize this until recently, the bike attachment feature is pretty great.

The lock comes with three keys and one has a light, which is pretty nice for unlocking and locking in the dark. For a week or so I had problems locking the lock. I could get my key in but I had trouble getting it out of the lock, when I locked the lock. I have a feeling this was a user error. Once I started using the lock holder this problem stopped. I suspect I was trying to take the key out at an odd angle or something. Either way, this problem stopped and I have had no other problems with this lock.

This lock also looks good, and it’s built well.
