Works with my Sony Xplod BT5700U headunit. Cable is long and thin so it can be easily tucked under trim panels. Comes with 2 adhesive clips to hold cable if you are running it under the dash. Other people say the hear me quite well. I have it attached to the visor though it can be mounted to dash with adhesive tape too. It rotates nearly 180 degrees.

I am using this external microphone with the Sony MEXBT3900U Sony MEXBT3900U In-Dash CD Receiver MP3/WMA/AAC Player with Bluetooth. I had the microphone and the car stereo installed at the same time, at Best Buy. I have found the quality of the hands-free calling over Bluetooth to be excellent. I can hear callers very well through my car speakers (it is loud and very easy to hear!). Callers can hear me very well, even at high speeds (with windows closed!). I haven’t opened up the window going 55 mph and checked the quality of the call, since this is a not realistic condition for me; but, may be if you have a convertible I guess.

I think the location where you install the microphone is very important. It should be fairly close to your mouth. After doing a lot of research on this, I had it installed on the visor (toward the left). I added some photos to the product page (I can’t add photos to this review) so you can see how it looks. The microphone is fairly close to my mouth, so I think this contributes to the excellent quality I am getting. Just keep in mind that, with this microphone location (at least on my car), if you want to lower your visor, the cord on the microphone can bend a little, which I guess could degrade the cord over time. Therefore, if I want to lower the visor far down to block sun, I just remove the mic (mic is very easy to remove; it “clips” on and off easily).

I guess you could also install to the right of the visor, like the Parrot Bluetooth systems do, but it’s a bit farther from your mouth, and harder to install. I’ve also seen it installed right behind the steering wheel on the “steering column”, but heard more negatives about this location than positives, probably because it is farther from your mouth than the left of visor position.

No better than my stock Pioneer mic, April 18, 2010

I have a Pioneer AVIC F90-BT and would hear complaints from the people I called that I sounded far away. I decided to get this mic to improve the sound quality but unfortunately was told by the person on the other line that now I sound like I’m far away, in a cave. This was with the Sony mic in the same place as the Pioneer.

Other than the Sony branding this mic seems to be exactly like the one that was included with my AVIC navigation unit but perhaps the internals are of lesser quality.

I would imagine that this is much better than a built-in, but it was actually worse than the Pioneer external mic to which it was compared.
