What do I have to basically know to take care of my car?

Question by Corbu: What do I have to basically know to take care of my car?
I will be getting a brand new car soon but I have no knowledge of cars.

Highest Priority—buy a good condition newest year (a new one is generally “best”) vehicle that you can afford from a “reputable” dealership WITH A WARRANTY——not from a local “Freddies” used car lot who OFFER THEIR OWN FINANCING—-INDEPENDENT “SHADY” OPERATORS /OPERATIONS OFTEN RELYING ON “DEFAULTS”, “REPO”s, AND SUBSEQUENT, MULTIPLE, RESALES OF THE SAME FAULTY “LEMONS”( OFTEN,USUALLY, OFFERED WITH ONLY AN “AS IS” NON-WARRANTY !!!)—in which you may well have to soon push,OR TOW,your vehicle home————-then,FIND A GOOD,HONEST, FULL SERVICE REPAIR SHOP!!! ( ask around—talk with other more experienced drivers and ‘suck-in’ their knowledge from their experiences)—FINDING AN “HONEST, FULL SERVICE REPAIR SHOP” IS MUCH HARDER THAN IT SOUNDS !!!—STEER CLEAR FROM REPAIR SHOPS THAT PAY ITS SO CALLED “MECHANICS” ON A COMMISSION BASIS (OVER THE YEARS, I’VE PERSONALLY HAVE SEEN FAR TOO MANY “BAD THINGS” SPECIFICALLY AT MIDAS, CAR-X, AND GOODYEAR SHOPS, OFTEN “PUSHING” REALLY UNNECESSARY “SERVICES” & PRODUCTS UPON MANY FEMALES,YOUNGSTERS, “SUITS”,AND JUST ABOUT AND ANYBODY THAT THEY “PEG” AS BEING”NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE” — FAITHFULLY FOLLOW THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE per manual, ASK “DUMB” QUESTIONS IMMEDIATELY UPON NOTICING ANY DEVIATION FROM “NORMAL” OPERATIONS ( YOUR VEHICLE WILL “TALK ” TO YOU—YOU ONLY HAVE TO HAVE “AN EAR” TO LISTEN—REPAIR PROBLEMS IMMEDIATELY!!!! ( “NIP PROBLEMS IN THE BUD”) ——–the BEST , AND CHEAPEST MAINTENANCE overall CARE PROGRAM advice IS TO KEEP YOUR OIL, FILTER(S) CHANGED -ON SCHEDULE,AND TIRES AIRED TO CORRECT PRESSURE,BELTS AND HOSES CHECKED REGULARLY , PLUS,AS PREVIOUSLY REFERENCED,MAKING YOURSELF FULLY AND THOROUGHLY FAMILIARIZED WITH YOUR OWNERS OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL(AND,THEN (of course),ACTUALLY HAVING THE MAINTENANCE ITEM(S) COMPLETED WHEN THEY COME DUE.)

1 read the owners manual. Everything from when to change the oil & with what is in there. I can’t stress reading that manual enough. I’ve seen it here many times people ask the obvious when all they have to do is read. Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know what to do. Especially when you have a new car you can take it to your dealers service counter & ask. They know there are plenty of people who just don’t know. Then of course don’t take your problems to Y!A here. You’ll get too many answers & most will be wrong.

If the car is brand new. It has a warranty. Take it back to the dealer for every little thing. That way when the warranty runs out everything should be in good shape. Seriously you got a warranty use it. It will save you later on.

Make sure you read your owners manual. Keep it in the glove box, don’t throw it away. Know when your car needs oil changes and tune ups. Don’t ignore the check engine light or any odd noises coming from the engine. They will not go away. Keep your tires inflated to manufacturers recommended weight. Under inflated tires can be dangerous and reduce gas mileage. Rotate tires every 6 or 7 thousand miles(refer to owners manual) Watch tread on tires. Tires with low tread are unsafe. Do the penny rest. Hold a penny upside down between the tire treads if the tread goes below lincolns head time to change the tires. Live in a snowy area. Learn how to put on chains, if you have 4 wheel drive learn how to turn it on. Change windshield wipers every year-they wear down. Keep an ice scraper handy, de icing spray is also helpful. Watch the car a couple times a month to remove grim and other build up. Never rive w/o insurance. Make sure to keep proof of it along with registration in glove box

Basic thing you need to know about car is : when time to do the routine maintenance, when time to oil changing, what type of oil you needed neither the engine and transmission, when time to change the filter, how much tyre pressure, fuel grade type, driving habit, washing the car, do and don’t do to your car. I think that will be all, just read your manual and servicing book, its all there. For auto repair, keep to dealer while still warranty to avoid unexpected thing and you can start to watch around for capable mechanic if you think the dealer is expensive.
