Question by pbcurtis22: What is the largest size tire you can put on a jeep wrangler tj without a lift?
What is the largest size tire you can put on a jeep wrangler tj without a lift?
I have 30×9.5 tires on my jeep wrangler right now and they are almost brand new. Is there a place I can trade my tires for bigger ones?

Best answer:

Answer by david z
the new 54″ super swamper bogger can fit without a lift.

cut off the fenders, get rims with no back space. widen out the rear axle…. then you wont need a lift, the tires will be next to your truck not under it.

unfortunately most places don’t take tires on trade, although you may find one its not likely…..as for the size, about the biggest you can go is 33s

My husband uses a web site called tirerack.com. He gets a lot of info there. I’d try them on sizing. good luck.

You can run a 31″ tire on a stock TJ without a problem, if you have a properly backspaced wheels. If you are running stock wheels, and run a 31×10.50, the tires will rub the control arms at full turn.

I have an ’00, and before I put a lift on it, I would rub my 31′s on a tougher trail. Don’t trade your tires in. A 1/2 inch of clearance won’t do you any good at all.

You can listen to these “experts” on this site or you can read the tire fit info info I provided for you down below. If you over-stuff your wheel wells you WILL rub while 4 wheeling. The idea is to not rub while wheel’n. You can also rub simply by turning while driving.
Check out the other links too. There is a lot cool stuff for Jeeps. Take your time, save some dough and do it right.

Also…..do your research. I find a lot of stuff and info online.

You can fit 31s in there, but if you offroad you will stuff the tires in the wheelwells.

If you want to go bigger, consider getting a $ 200 Budget Boost, which will give you a little more suspension clearance. The 31s will then clear easily, and you may be able to put 32s under there (but again you’ll stuff them when you offroad).

Also keep in mind the strength of your axle and the size of your engine. If you have a 2.5L engine, the bigger tires will cost you in power and highway speed…
