Are you just plain stupid? Money my man, money is the answer. Their sales were terrible. Money is always the bottom line. It’s usually the answer to most questions also.

The Insight was a niche automobile. Simply a test bed for the technology. The Insight was a 2-seat vehicle and was not practical. Also the cost of producing a dedicated platform for a hybrid vehicle was much greater than they could charge for the car. Honda lost thousands of dollars per-car on the Insight. It was basically used as a test-of-theory car. In the end, the technology pioneered by the Insight is now in the Civic Hybrid. The public prefers a car that is practical (4-doors + trunk) and is essentially identical to the non-hybrid car.

The Metro was sold by Chevrolet as a way for Chevrolet to offer its customers an economical car they Chevrolet did not build. Chevrolet did not have a small car in its inventory in the 90′s, and so they purchased the Suzuki Swift, and rebadged it as the Geo/Chevrolet Metro, as a way to broaden its vehicle lineup. The theory is that people who are brand loyal will purchase a Suzuki with a Chevy badge, rather than the identical car with a Suzuki badge. Anyway, since that time, GM has purchased Daewoo, and is now importing the Daewoo as the Chevy Aveo.

Hi, get comfy…

essentially, the Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift would never have the mileage today that it had back when they were new.

What I mean is if GM/Suzuki had to include all the safety, insulating, electronic, etc. features that the government and the average consumer legislate/expect/demand/pay for, the Geo Metro would weigh hundreds of pounds more than it did.

Modern advanced airbags alone add a hundred pounds or more to a vehicle in bags, wiring, computer modules, sensors, bracing, etc.

How many airbags did the Geo Metro have? I guarantee it did not have advanced front, side seat and side curtain bags.

Add in ABS, stereo systems, more than two seats (Insight), actual steel body panels (not aluminum bodies like the Insight), current crash resistant bumpers and subframes, and all the other myriad pieces that a current car must have, and that is why there is no Insight or Metro that gets 50+ mpg.

People pay for what they want and, as other people have pointed out, the Metro and Insight were niche vehicles, just (shudder along with me) like the H2 is.

And for what it means, I miss the manual tranny Insight, too.

The Metro (Geo/Chevy) was a rebadged Suzuki Swift.
